Tulip Queen of the Night

CULTURE. When horticulturalist Jan Jacob Grullemans attempted to create a black tulip in 1895, he ended up with the Queen of Night. It is deep purple instead of black. Nevertheless, the flower is still one of the darkest tulips in the world. It frequently appears in literature and films to symbolise mystery.

COLOUR EFFECT. Purple Black is not really black. This is exactly what makes this colour so extremely deep. It reminds me of Japanese lacquer: layers of transparent Purple are applied one over the other to create an intensely rich colour. The colour combination is restrained and solid under all lighting conditions.
